Tailgating already comes with enough equipment. Coolers, folding chairs, food and whatever is going on the grill all have to make it from the car to the parking lot, which makes bringing a massive speaker less appealing than it sounds.

The JBL PartyBox Encore Essential 2 lands in a useful middle ground. It’s built to deliver party-level sound in a portable package that won’t demand quite as much trunk space as some supersized speakers. And right in time for football season, Best Buy is taking $80 off the speaker through Oct. 18.

JBL – PartyBox Encore Essential 2
Portable Party Speaker
$249.95 $329.95 24% off
Battery life tops out at 15 hours on a single charge, giving it enough staying power to handle the pregame and keep going well after kickoff. JBL also gives the speaker an IPX4 splash-resistant rating, a no-brainer addition for something likely to spend its weekends next to drinks, coolers and a table full of game-day food.
Then there are the features that earn it the PartyBox name. A built-in light show synchs with whatever you’re playing and can be customized through the JBL PartyBox app, where you can also adjust the EQ and other settings. Dedicated mic and guitar inputs add karaoke and live music to the equation, should your tailgate unexpectedly turn into something more ambitious.
For larger gatherings, the PartyBox also supports Auracast. The Bluetooth technology lets you pair two Encore Essential 2 speakers for stereo sound or link multiple compatible JBL speakers to a single source. For a tailgate that starts at one car and somehow takes over half the parking lot, that’s arguably more useful than simply turning one speaker up louder.
Not everyone needs to arrive with a full PartyBox, though. Best Buy is also taking $20 off the JBL Grip through Oct. 18, giving you a much smaller option that can easily come along for the day. The compact wireless speaker offers up to 14 hours of playtime with Playtime Boost, built-in ambient lighting and an IP68 waterproof and dustproof rating. It supports Auracast as well, so multiple compatible speakers can still join the same setup.

The difference really comes down to how much speaker you want to bring with you. The PartyBox Encore Essential 2 is the one for taking over the playlist and supplying sound for the group; the Grip makes more sense when you want something you can grab on the way out the door. And neither one has to go into storage once football season ends.
